Baby Steps

Every day I've been trying to do some work towards Forever Home Cat Rescue.  It isn't an easy task to start a rescue and I'm still not really sure where this is heading.  Regardless, it feels great to be doing something during the day.  David tells me that I'm starting to micro-manage everybody in the house now that I'm not as busy as I used to be.  I think he was being polite. :)

The Sunday adoption at the shelter fell through.  While they were waiting, the woman ended up going next door to the SPCA and adopting two kittens - complete with $400.00 adoption fee - and taking them home.  My friend-in-rescue was so upset because she had recommended her.  Upset enough, that she took home little Kiara:
Imagine my delight receiving an email that Kiara had been taken home!  This little polydactyl girl had been languishing at the shelter since August.

It wasn't such a bad day after all.  Certainly not for Kiara!  :)  I'm not at all upset about the kittens being adopted from next door at the SPCA.  They needed a home too.

I want to ask Kim, "Is anybody rescuing from the shelter right now?"  But I already know the answer, and my heart hurts.

No rescues.  No public adoptions.  No chance for survival.  They're all sitting there waiting for their turn to die.  I can hardly stand it.

But I haven't given up.

I am so happy for Kiara. One more kitty saved. That's wonderful. We are having many ups and downs with our own kennel/shelter in my town. After an inspection the number of days a cat can be kept there is 5 now and only 8 cats are allowed there at one time. They said the ventilation needed to be changed and the kennel needed to be made larger if they want to house any more than that....but there is no money for that and the town will not pay for it. 8 cats is a far cry from what was there before and some stayed for months with the hopes that they would find a forever home. No chance of that anymore. I fear for what's ahead. We need foster homes but there are so few people that want to do that. It's tough and the cats are the losers. Keep us in your thoughts. Hugs, Deb =^..^=x5

Maybe it was because I was so young, but, when we wanted our AC&C to start doing adoptions I didn't know it was suppose to be "impossible". We took it to the streets, as the saying goes, and got our city involved. It was hard to resist all those voices saying it was time to change. We even convinced a local mall that it would be great PR for them to donate some space to adoptions. The first round was getting them to allow volunteers in. It was a lot of hard work and it was a good thing we were, as my stepfather put it, to young and stupid to realize it couldn't be done.

The offer to help still stands! Anything you need, let me know. I can post for foster homes etc - actually I know someone who wants to foster who lives in Hamilton and a certain rescue has not returned any of her calls.

And yay for Kiara, if the woman had not of called to do an adoption, three cats would have a worse fate right now, at least you were comfortable adopting to her so the kittens have a good home and the SPCA has a little more space to take some more too.

For sure I am picking up Bruno and Harrison. Kittens B have also been put on hold and have been vaccinated.

Do you have any suggestions for people who want to see public adoptions become a reality at this shelter some day? How can we best facilitate change????

Anonymous: I think putting some pressure on the SPCA next door might be the way to go. I'd like to know why the Chairman of the SPCA is also the man that kills the cats next door.

Animal Control is there to control the animals. Which they are doing. Finding space within AC for adoptions is another issue....

Ahhh....not enough space to cover everything here.
