I have a pretty strong stomach. I'm a Mom and have had diarrhea squirted down the front of me. I've been pee'd on, pooped on, and barfed on. So it takes a lot to really give me the heebie-jeebies.
Now we have our first "Gross File".
Take this perfect little guy that we named "The Captain":
How could this guy be part of "The Gross Files"??
When I went to the shelter today to specifically rescue this 4 week old angel, I received a call from the shelter vet tech while enroute:
Tech: "Are you coming for the 4 week old orange kitten?"
Me: "Yessssss"
Tech: "Just so you know, he has maggots coming out of his rectum."
Me: (tapping on the bluetooth) "Say that again?"
Tech: "Maggots. Kitten. Rectum. He's covered in ticks too."
Me: (gagging)"Oh God."
When I arrived at the shelter, the tech had given him all the medical care that was available to her, and I took the little guy to our vet. Turns out maggots in the bum isn't really that big of a deal and he's otherwise healthy. The maggots will leave as soon as he poops.
Seriously. Maggot nightmares are happening tonight. I can just FEEL it.
So the gross little guy is now known as "The Captain" thanks to the girls at the vets office. I held the little guy closely under my chin the entire trip - I was terrified I might see a maggot or something.
But look how precious he is! You wouldn't have left him at the shelter - and neither could I.
(Additional Note: I received a phone call from the vet tech a few moments ago. Two more "maggot kittens" from this litter came into the shelter a few more moments ago. *Sigh*)

That is gross. But oh, Beth, that second photo...Look at him, all cuddled up. Oh, my god, he just breaks my heart. Sending him tons of universal Light and hoping he and his litter mates will be okay.
UGH - while I am sure it is nothalf as gross, this reminds me of when we had a [black] foster cat and my husband wanted to know why it looked like rice was all over her back end. We soon added, to our budding knowledge of cats, that the 'rice' was tapeworms :(
Been there....and I am trying not to laugh since I can SO relate.
When I found Bug last fall, she had an open wound and a similar "problem" in addition to fleas. She also got the OK from the vet. My parting words to the vet were "thanks for your help, I am going to go home and lite myself on fire now to get rid of the cooties".
We hope the little guy is going to be OK - cause darn he is adorable. :)
Pretty gross...but maggots...worms...fairly similar in my books! Ok, maybe I'd say otherwise if I saw a maggot coming out of his poor little bum! Good to hear the little guy is otherwise healthy!
I've heard of this before Beth.
These kittens were most likely outside when they were picked up in this scorching heat we have been having. If their bums are a bit red and raw from their poop the maggots appear. I know, GROSS! Poor little baby but look at that face. You are so great at this Beth. You are doing what you are meant to do.
Awww bless him. One nice big poopy doo and hopefully all those nasty maggots will be gone. That's got tickle and itch a bit. He looks so comfy cosy tucked up under your chin. He must know he is safe now :)xxxxxxxxxx extra kisses for the little Captian xxxxxx
Random Felines: LMAO!!!!

Holy moly....okay, you win the gross out competition... I was so sure I had a shot when Batman had his diarrea and well, I posted on FB so you know..but boy, this wins hands down...
I'm going to tell Matt at an appropriate moment and watch his reaction...There may be some gagging :D
Apart from the ...errr... extra baggage the little guy has, he is adorable!
Sweet dreams! ;-)
Are you going back for the other two?
Cindy, Bertie, Sammy etc etc etc
tape worms are far more gross....one massive worm that breaks off into pieces....to crawl around....EEEEEEK!!!!
I'll never forget my poor foster cat. Skinny thing trying to feed her babies and she yacks a big 'ole tapeworm in the middle of the floor. I still have nightmares about it crawling towards my room....
Given the creepiness...maybe naming him after the Munsters!
Aw, he's so freaking adorable I could live with the maggots. Really, it's weird, but they will only eat dead and rotting tissue and leave behind healthy flesh to help heal. That being said, yuck!
Oh boy! Glad I wasn't eating when I read your blog! I'd suggest some vaseline around the bum area to sooth it. Also baby wipes make great kitty bum wipers, before the vaseline!
I melted into a huge puddle on the floor when I looked at the second photo...oh my oh my oh my...
I hope you are able to get the other two as well. Poor sweet babies.
Is there an update to this little guy...The Captain? And his litter mates?
Boy, I need to cuddle a kitten in the worst way. LOL.
Fuzzy Tales: Our little Captain is doing GREAT - the vet said it was a "non-biggie". I'm hopeful to rescue the littermates... still working on that!
