My heart sank when I walked into the shelter this morning to see all the newly emptied cages. "Right, it's Tuesday...the "Vet Day". I only had one cat to rescue today and I couldn't help but wonder if the cat I was going to get died that morning. What a sobering thought.
I hate to complain, but I'm always put off my an employee who finds it acceptable to let the cats sit in their own poop and who haven't eaten since the day before while she stands there and reads the newspaper that's going to be placed in the bottom of their cages. Is she deaf? Can't she hear the desperation from these poor animals who are so hungry? The open cans of food are just a few feet away. It was noon and nobody had been fed yet. Yes, she stands there and reads the eff'ing newspaper!! Yet, I keep my mouth shut.
Glad I have this blog to rant a bit.
The fortunate girl that was rescued today is "Maggie":
I don't know why Maggie is bald in the back. Looks like she had been shaved - but she's sweet as pie, and the new foster Mom has already reported that she's made friends with her 2 year old daughter. Yippee!
February 1st has begun with two more foster parents added to the books. I continue to set my sights forward and hope that adoptions start to pick up again. At this point, I need to feel grateful that the cats that I've rescued are remaining healthy (or becoming healthy) and that I'm working with some of the most awesome people in rescue.

Can you explain what you meant when you wrote "I only had one cat to rescue today and I couldn't help but wonder if the cat I was going to get died that morning." Did the cat you were going to get, got put to sleep that morning?
It is hard, but try to take comfort in that they are euthanized humanely, and have not had to suffer outside in the weather, or by some kind of disease. There is fear and sadness but no physical suffering. I don't know if that really helps though. :(
I don't know how you do it Beth, keeping your mouth shut about/to that IDIOTIC employee. I sure hope they don't have children or animals -- if they do, they sure don't deserve it. Someone should like them in a cage with their own feces and eat donughts in front of them while their tummy growls.
I can't hold my toungue...I've had words with paid employees several times. Being a volunteer doing extra jobs because said employee is to "busy" being paid to do nothing makes my blood boil and I have no problem bringing this to the attention of their boss. Of course, our shelter is a true shelter and the animals come first.
You're a strong women, much stronger than I. I don't think I could have kept my mouth shut. If that girl is being paid to work, she should be working, not reading. If she is volunteering, she clearly doesn't want to be there. And at the expense of hungry kitties... :(
Faith: I hadn't really chosen which cat I wanted to rescue, so I was wondering if the cat that I should've rescued was already gone.
They didn't used to euthanize them humanely at this shelter. I'm grateful that they aren't out in that weather too.
Beth you are the most generous person I know. I probably would have started cleaning and feeding while making a huge fuss. I hate when people work in animal related areas but don't give a care. I'm glad to hear that Maggie is doing so well.
Was it the ditz ?
Brandon: The Dimwit. :)
bald spot might be stress. I had a cat that chewed the fur off her legs in such a uniform pattern you'd swear she had been shaved. Rescue remedy (health food store) works.
Thanks Beth for explaining that! :) At least poor Maggie is in a loving foster home!
Hi Beth
great job on rescuing Maggie, she looks really sweet. If the euthanasia methods have improved since the management changed, that's good cause at least their endings are more peaceful.
Oh, look at Maggie's pleading eyes! So happy she is safe. Thank you.
