Will the Real Bone-Head Please Stand Up?

I spent a smidgen of the day today scratching my head over a recent comment on yesterday's blog post.  The writer of the comment felt that we shouldn't have rescued the Mom cat and her 4 kittens because one of the kittens was "spitty hissy".  In fact, I was called a "bone-head" for rescuing them!  She felt that there were nicer and more attractive Moms and kittens elsewhere.

That might be true.  I might be a bone-head to rescue little lives that by their parenthood, aren't flashy orange or calicos, but does this mean that because they are black or have never felt a kind human hand in their short 6 weeks of life that they should die?

My mission is to work with others and save feline lives by placing cats into loving forever homes.  I don't care if it's from a city shelter, a rural shelter or the streets.

I'm not going to publish the comment, because I don't want to further humiliate this person for being such a doofus.   It's really hard for me to believe there are people out there that feel that way.

How could anyone look at these little faces that were rescued and feel as if they should die?

Now tell me....who's the real bone-head?

(Many warm hugs and thank you's to the loving foster Mom that stepped forward to save this not-so-perfect family.  Your love and care will go a long way.  Rest assured,  the rewards are immeasurable)

And not only that but black cats risk a higher chance of NOT being rescued like all the oranges and calico's ....and a hissy 6 week old can easily be changed into a loving lap cat!

KUDOS TO YOU BETH!

Hi Beth,

You remember Thomasina, the hatbox kitty from the lady going to Minnesota? When T first joined us, she hated being touched or picked up - she would squeal until you ceased. Now, she endures my cuddles with a small purr, and sleeps in my arms at night. One person's hissy (or in my case, squealie) kitty, is someone else's "lovely girl". Secretly, she is my favourite - but don't tell the other cats.

Hard to believe anybody with half a brain would say something like that.

Obviously, this person has other problems. She should be ashamed of herself. Hopefully, she isn't a parent!

Chin up, Beth - you did the right thing. They're all little lambs and deserve to live.

I can't believe someone who thinks they care about kitties would even think of saying such a thing! I am glad you know the real definition of bone-head.

Beth, you have to post the comment so we can all have a laugh. Why would she care what shelter you rescue from?

You and others are saving lives - isn't that what counts?

I feel sort of sorry for her. She has no joy in her life at all.

Keep doing what you're doing, Beth!

I don't know, they look pretty purrfect to us...

They're beautiful! I give it 4 days before the "hissy spitty" kitten comes around for kisses.

I vote for publishing the comment and humiliating the jerk.

I hope her kids are good looking.

Awww they are so sweet!!!! Sorry to hear you are having problems with dummies that have nothing better to do but pick on people giving their time and money to a worthwhile cause. Perhaps they should start their own cause and donate their own time and money...it can be "Dummies for Dummies"!!!

Very cute kitties, and kudos for all involved.

How did this person even know one of the kittens had sass? I don't see that anywhere?

There's definitely a bonehead somewhere, and it ain't you.

@Anonymous1 agreed, I would hate to be her child esp if I were ugly. PS that made me laugh when I read it, pretty hard, had to explain to the bf what was so funny. He agrees it is ridic of this lady to make such an ignorant comment. He has cat allergies and until me has never had a pet in his life and he 'gets' it :)

@Beth, Next kitty I adopt you better believe will be black:) and I dont care if it is a spitty one hahaha (it just means they need more squishies!). Keep up the great non-discriminating work!

I feel like we should create a purple paw print to stop feline racism...id put it on my bumper for sure :)

Thats terrible..............one life isn't better than the other! They are all deserving of being rescued no matter what!

Sadly there is no quick fix for ignorance (short of trying to smack it out of people ;-)

Thankfully there are incredible and inspirational people like you Beth who wade through the filth, cat poop and horrid desolate sadness to save whatever little souls you can.

For the bone-head who said there were surely more "attractive" cats you could have rescued -- ugly is as ugly does...it's what's inside that counts! Perhaps they could learn a thing or two from our feline friends who despite all odds & injustices, seem to overcome their prejudices against us "ugly" humans and love us -- warts and all :-)

If a cat needs help, it doesn't matter where it's rescued or what colour it is.

I'm assuming that this person isn't a rescuer and just a nasty old b*tch?

I think you did the right thing, for sure, Beth. All cats deserve loving homes- no matter what color or disposition.
I'm also guessing some rescues do a sort of triage type thing where they rescue the cats they think are "most adoptable".
Sometimes I think the hardest part of rescue is working with the *people* involved. It helps to remember that we're all working towards a common goal- saving cats. (At least I hope we are!)

This one made me shake my head. So what if she spits at six weeks old. Wouldn't you if you'd been shoved in a cage in a horrid shelter? As another poster said, all that means is an excuse to give more squishy cuddles to. Chin up, Beth. Laugh at her, because any other emotion is wasted effort. You know you're doing the right thing, the cats know you're doing the right thing, and sensible people the world over appreciate what you're doing. Next time you want to get angry, go look at those little faces you rescued, and instead of getting mad, feel sorry for the idiot, that they've never known love from a cat which is deep enough to transcend small things like a cute, spitty kitten. At least you've lived a full, rich life and are capable of giving as good as you get in the love stakes. Keep up the excellent work!

damn, and here I thought that so many of us that LOVE cats love them partially becuase they ARE such characters - and yes, their hissy, aloof, patrician, dismissive, disgusted and revengeful natures are a LOT why they make such delightful companions (never a boring moment with cats in the house!) ... as two of my cats are black (1 brown tabby - I know, your favourite Beth, and one fat orange tom (becuase I think all orange toms have a rule they have to be sorta fat) - I know from experience how many people do NOT like black cats - so stupid!

The black cats are so cute! Cant' believe someone would have a problem with them... It will be good when they read your blog today and see all the support you have.

Cats are no different than humans!

Should we refrain from sending relief to countries if their people aren't adorable? (little bit of a stretch)

I think my eye is twitching.

I pity this person that apparently has never known the joy of a black kitty. I foster so I have been able to live with a number of cats and I think the black kitties have an extra spunk to their personality.

This all sounds very interesting,it seems to me that this bone-head is someone who happened to rescue the kitten with you.

My cat Blair was infact a spitty, hissy kitten and still is sometimes, all part of her Blairness. BUT she has also grown to also be a purring snuggler and loves to play with people as well.

Kittens are always hissy-spitty, especially when they've had no reason yet to trust humans.

We've had Mr. Jones for almost a year, trapped as a feral, and he STILL hisses and spits at us. And, he's a black cat with tons of health problems, so really, he's very unadoptable if you think about it. (Except, we failed fostering and adopted him ourselves, because really, look at this face: www.misterjones.ca) He deserved a chance just like every other cat.

(I still don't get the issue with black dogs and cats. Can't quite understand it.)

As the foster Mom to the black mama cat now christened Maya and her 4 kittens I was shocked to hear of the blatant bigotry of this person's remarks. FYI, only one of the kittens (Gandalf) was friendly and playful when he got here. The other 3 were untouchable. After only a few days of persistence, high pitched baby talk, sitting on the floor motionless until they are ready to check me out, and the promise of high quality cat food and treats, one kitten(Hendrix)has totally come around and is enjoying cuddles. Today after watching Gandalf and Hendrix take turns on my lap, Miss Hissy Spitty (Arwen) climbed up my leg and onto my lap for a moment. She ran when I reached out to her but experience tells me it is only a matter of time now before she will accept my cuddles with purrs instead of hisses. The fourth kitten (Aretha)is also still resistent to being touched but she too is watchful of the fun and I know she will come around with patience.
Mama cat Maya is the spitting image of a cat of mine who passed away many years ago at the age of 19. I rescued her in 1977 as the only kitten that could be approached from a feral litter. She was one of the sweetest, gentlest cats ever (just like Maya) and gave me all those years of pure joy and love. I resent this persons attitude that what Beth did and what I am doing in caring for this young family is not worthwhile. I know there are lots of good people out there and there are loving forever homes in these beautiful creatures future!

Like Jenn said, I don't get it either. I've always felt that black cats, whether short or long-haired, are especially beautiful and elegant. I've had two myself.

And how in the world could that woman be so negative about a kitten, a BABY, for Pete's sake!!!!?????

It's a shame there are so many stupid people in this world.

hey beth. just wondering how does a place like that horrible shelter with the rusted cages pass as humane? specially if they dont clean the cages. i havent read far into your blog yet im still trying to catch up. but shouldnt something be done about the conditions they are living in? not having food!
