Back at It

The weekend definitely took some wind out of my sails, but I was back at the shelter today to do a rescue.  Five more souls left that place today.  It felt good to walk out of there with a carload.

I couldn't walk away from a special needs calico kitten we named "Daisy":
She's about 16 weeks old and obviously blind.  The vet thinks that she might have some vision, but it's unknown how much.  I had planned on rescuing her today and was absolutely sick to my stomach when I saw that she had been marked for euthanasia this morning, but taken off the list at the last minute.  Shit - I had forgotten to tell anyone that I was coming for her.  She was almost "executed" and I was the Governor.
Thank heavens she's safe.  I kissed her a million times.  I hope she can forgive me.

The vet said he could hardly hear her heart beating because she was purring so loud.  I think I've been forgiven.

I rescued her and two other rowdy little teenager types for a foster Mom that loves the hooligans - "Armen" was one of the fortunate boys out of there today.  I think we should call him Captain Marvel.  (or not?)

The foster Mom that lost "Bella" over the weekend (5 month old pregnant with 8 kittens) was back in the saddle today as we travelled to the shelter together.  Understandably, some of the wind was out of her sails too.  But she was back at the shelter to rescue again (bless her heart) and desperately tried to fill the void that little Bella had filled.  It was a tough act to follow, but she left with "Pebbles":

Needless to say, some of my earlier cockiness is gone.  I've been doing this long enough to know that where ever there is bad news - good news isn't far behind.

Certainly the "Good news" started with the five that were rescued this morning.  Amen to that.

Hurrah for 5 rescues! That's fantastic! And isn't Daisy just a doll? What a sweetheart!

I'm glad you're feeling better and that another 5 made it out of the shelter! They are adorable!

I learned through FB that one of the cats that R is getting is Armen... I can't wait to meet him :-) As for his new name, 'Captain Marvel'... really Beth? Because you know that the minute I see him, I'll want him ( and Matt will have a fit...). Considering that I've already got a 'Batman' (thankyouverymuch, he's a complete teenager at the minute...), I could start my own super hero club!

Matt's been desperate to get me to repeat his new mantra 'no more than four' but I don't know, for some reason, I don't find it a very catchy mantra... :-)

I was thinking "Zorro" or "Dr. Doom" (you can't tell me he doesn't look like he's planning world domination!), for little Armen, myself, but we'll have to see what name he tells me. He's adorable. And, y'know, if Cindy DOES fall in love with him, that'd open another spot at my place.

And rescuing Pebbles is the best way to honor little Bella. When I lose a cat, I nearly always adopt a new one, so even though I'll never get my lost one back, another cat is alive because of him. It's a rescue version of the "gift of life".

This is a weird question, but why spend money on vet bills to restore a kitten's sight? Blind cats usually do very well with an understanding owner. If her eyes aren't giving her any discomfort, what's the harm in leaving her blind?

Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better - those 5 cats are lucky you're around!

I like Capt. Marvel too and the lady who rescued him is "marvel"-ous! ( YOU!) You must sleep very well at night knowing the good you do for these darling critters. Well, except for the nights when you worry...would imagine there are more of those nights than the other ones. Have you ever thought about putting a Donate button in your side bar? I think a lot of people would help if all they had to do was click.

Kirstie: That's a good question, and I agree with you. We're trying to insure that she's in no pain and that the corneal cloudiness isn't getting worse or ulcerating.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. My partner jokes that I only like 'damaged' pets - blind, three legged, wobbly... but I just like uniqueness! Obviously I understand the need to make sure the cat isn't in pain.

I hope the rest of your week continues to look up.
