Since December 2009, he's been living at the shelter as the "shelter cat". We always thought he was happy. It wasn't exactly a "real home", but it was the best that could be expected for a 35 lb. cat that was abandoned at the shelter.
It's certainly better than being dead.
Since then, Chunk is down to a svelt 28 pounds!
I received a Facebook message from a staff member yesterday that Chunk had been sick. The City spent $500.00 on x-rays, bloodwork, etc., but found nothing. In the usual City lack-of- commitment-to-the-animals-mode-of-operation, they determined that they've spent enough on Chunk and wanted to kill him. So the staff member brought Chunk home for a few days to assess him.
Chunk is doing much better in a home environment. He's getting stronger, but needs a place where he can call home - even if it's a foster home. Chunk is only 3-4 years old AND declawed.
Surely there's somebody out there that can give Chunk a home and love him? I've spent so much time with big hunk o' love and he's my favourite boy!

Oh, there's a lot of him to love! Purrs and Light and crossed paws that someone will step forward and give him a wonderful forever home, ASAP!
Oh no! I am going to post about Chunk on my FB page right now!
shared on facebook ... I hope this beautiful boy finds sanctuary soon - beth how does he get along with others cats and has he been exposed to dogs?
I will post about Chunk on my FB page too.
Thank you so much!!
Chunk is "OK" with other cats and dogs. He's not going to be buddies with any of them, but that might be because he's too big to play. Awww :(
How I wish he could be sent here in Dallas, TX!!
Thanks for posting about him beth. Chunk and I thank you for it. Honestly chunk is a really great cat. He doesnt do much, just watches the birds outside, and sits on the back porch (when allowed) :) Chunk sleeps a lot. I think this has a lot to do with his weight, and if he was to lose a little bit more, maybe he would become more active. His appetite is increasing more each day. I believe when he was weighed at the vet last he was about 26 lbs. I bet he's even a bit lower then that now.
I think all chunk needs is a forever home, time and lots of love.
I hope that someone comes forward and gives this sweet boy the home that he deserves.
Thanks again beth!
he's a cutie! hope he finds a forever home!
so sad that he was declawed...hope he finds a home soon.
I'm confused... is Chunk in a foster home now? I'm not sure what post is the most up to date... this guy is SO cute!!! I worked at a no-kill shelter in Chicago for years (so I understand the connections!) and love your blog. Thanks so much for doing such a good thing...
Will share Chunk on Facebook. Poor fella!
WW
Shared on my FB! We'll find him a home!
Thomas: Chunk is at the home of a staff member from the shelter, but she can't keep him there.
Thank you for caring!

Keep me in mind for him if no one else steps up for him. I already have cats but would hate to see this big boy put down. He could, possibly, be diabetic, as I read where he hadn't been tested for that. I have dealt with 2 previous diabetic cats, who lived to be 14 and 15, and now I have another one just 7 years old diagnosed with it. Where is this 'Chunk of Love' located?
Hey Nancy -
Thank you for your kind offer! I'm sure Chunk has been tested for diabetes when blood was taken.
Chunk is in the Hamilton, Ontario area west of Toronto :)

I see now that you are in Toronto. The transport I use is coming to the NE next week...MA and CN....if we could somehow get him over that way to meet the transport guy, I could get him then. I won't use anyone but this couple as they are just theee best I have ever dealt with in transport. I have a friend in Alfred, NY area...am wondering if she could drive and meet you somewhere to get him that far....then I'll have to look for further transports from Alfred, NY over to where this transport can get him. Myabe we could talk by phone sometime....I have freee long distance with my job here at home and can call all over.
Check out my blog under MY POSTS and then click on PETS and you will see that my cats all get good care and vet care whenever they need it. I haven't blogged in a good while and need to catch it up as I have lost 4 cats to various things since Aug. 1, 2009.
We are a rescue in SC and once had Rocky, a kitty about as large as Chunk, also declawed. You don't say exactly what Chunk's symptoms are but reading between the lines it sounds as though he is off his food? Rocky had same problem; bloodwork didn't give definitive diagnosis, but ultrasound and needle biopsy showed idiopathic hepatic lipidosis; we treated him for this but he crashed and despite emergency care we lost him. A necropsy showed that he had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which wasn't diagnosed by the regular vet, the internist or the emergency vet. So you may want to consider possible HL (common in stressed fat declawed cats) and/or HCM. Good luck and hope Chunk can be saved.
Hi there.. my mom was telling me about Chunk this morning and she really really wants him.. Do you know what the cost would be to have him shipped to her we are in Tennessee.. I know he would have an excellent home with her. Please let me know if you still have him and what would need to be done to get him for her.
Thanks so much !

Shannon: That's so kind of you and your Mom. I don't think "shipping" a guy like this is a great idea. He's not feeling 100% up to par and I think it might be too much for him to travel that far.
Thank you anyway :)

yay Nancy!! many thanks from the peanut gallery :)
yay Nancy and Shannon! Nancy - so good to know he has a home, thank you! (PS - I can drive him if needed!)
Have your heard about Pilots for Paws? They provide air travel for animals across the US on various small planes and fit in animals where they can.
Anonymous: I have heard of them and they're awesome. I'm desperately trying to find a local placement for our big buddy. I think air travel will be too much for him.

I posted about him on FB, I would LOVE to take him but cant have inside animals. :( I pray someone takes him.
I want him - but we are at a limit of 2 cats and a dog - however I am in Carlsbad and just posted this on FB to share...

Well, if you can somehow get him to NYC, I'd take him in, at least for a foster...
Is Chunk in Canada? If so, he couldn't even come to American could he?
Everybody has been so wonderful about Chunk! I need for our big boy to remain in the Toronto area. I don't think it's healthy for him at this point to be transported.
I'm still hopeful!!
I sent an email out to people at work, there is no way I can go through the heartache of a cat that big again but I am happy to help with tips for anyone who fosters/adopts him
I have sent word to everyone I know who would be able to care for a special boy like Chunk. I'd take him in a heartbeat if I didn't already have two big boys!
If he was over in the UK i would give him a home. But i hope someone takes him on soon.
ive posted this on fb to some canucks i know, i hope this boy who reminds me of my fat orange kitty gets a home, i love chunk <3
How is Chunk doing health-wise now? Have you found out what is going on with him and is he improving?
Carocats: Chunk is doing GREAT! He's eating and back to his happy-go-lucky self :)

Sometimes cats will go through a weird sick spell. I had that happen with a cat...he just stopped eating and drinking, then dehydrated. I had him at the vets with bloodtests and IV fluids. Still wasn't eating or drinking after 2 days at the vets. I brought him home bewildered, and suddenly he was fine. No idea to this day what happened.
